How do you

plan a Passive House?

With help!!!  In order to meet the rigorous Passive House standards the design must be carefully planned and modeled using the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP).  PHPP is a software package that is used for energy modelling to ensure that the design can meet the standards.   We have hired a Passive House consultant, Garth Hood, of Thoughtful Dwellings based out of Fredericton, NB.  Garth is working with us to carefully design the house and do the energy modelling.  He will also support us with the Passive House construction details as well as the sourcing of materials such as windows, doors, and the HRV (heat recovery ventilator).

Currently, we are in the design phase and going back and forth with Garth on different drafts of the layout of the home.  We are wanting a relatively compact design considering we are a family of six (under 2000 sq ft) and have asked Garth to incorporate a lot of things into that space.  We have been very pleased with the drafts we have seen to date and know we are going to have a design that works for our family!

To see a Passive House that Garth has designed you can take a look at the Naugler House.  (http://www.nauglerhouse.com/)  There are a lot of great pictures of both construction details and interior design.  What I love as well is that there is data available on the site to see how much energy the home has used!

Check out the website for Thoughful Dwellings too!
